Add It (spelling rules)

In Letters and Sounds the Blue Team have been learning about plurals  and the Red Team have been learning about adding suffixes to the ends of words when using the continuous and past tense.  Today we played a game called Add It which practised these skills in a fun way.

In small groups, we had to run and look at either a noun (for plurals) or a verb (for the tenses), remember it, then run back to the group and think about the spelling rule that applied.  Abigail explained that when a noun ends in 'ch', 'sh', 'ss', 'x' or 'tch' we add es.  Charlie remembered that most nouns that end in 'o' (e.g potato) needs an 's' added for the plural. Then there are unaccountable nouns...

For the verbs, we had to think carefully about adding 'ing' for the continuous tense and 'ed' or 'ied' for the past tense.  Miss Johnston also included some irregular verbs which didn't fit the pattern!
